How to Wash K-Tip Hair Extensions Without Damaging the Bonds
K-tip (keratin bond) extensions are durable, but how you wash them in the first few weeks decides whether the bonds stay tight for the full wear cycle. As a Louisville K-tip extension specialist, here is the wash routine I send every new guest home with.
Wait, then wash on a schedule
- Wait 24–48 hours after install before the first wash so the keratin bonds fully set.
- Wash 2–3 times per week — over-washing weakens the bonds faster than almost anything else.
- Brush thoroughly before you get in the shower so wefts go in tangle-free.
Shampoo with your head upright
- Never flip your head upside down — gravity pulls on every bond at once.
- Cleanse the scalp gently between the bonds, not aggressively on them.
- Rinse thoroughly so no product is left sitting around the keratin tips.
Skip heavy oils and masks on the bonds
Heavy oils, deep masks and rich conditioners are wonderful for the lengths but break down keratin bonds on contact. Keep all of it from mid-shaft to ends only, and never apply oil directly at the root.
