What NOT to Do with Your Weft Extensions
Most weft damage I see in the chair is preventable, and it almost always traces back to one of three habits. Here are the hair extension mistakes to avoid if you want your install to look as beautiful at move-up as it did the day you left.
1. Don't adjust or 'fix' your extensions yourself
If a row feels loose, a thread pops, or something is sliding — don't pull, snip or re-tie. DIY adjustments are the fastest way to damage the install and the natural hair underneath. Send your stylist a photo and book a quick check-in.
2. Don't go past your recommended maintenance window
Sewn-in wefts have a maintenance timeline for a reason. Leaving them in past the recommended window puts tension on your natural hair, causes matting at the row, and can damage both the extension hair and your own. Book your move-up before you leave the salon.
3. Don't color your extensions at home
Box dye, root touch-ups and toning glosses are not formulated for extension hair. Even a 'just the roots' application bleeds. If your color needs refreshing — base, gloss, fashion, or a tweak to your blend — book a service so it's handled correctly.
Failure to follow home care can lead to damage to both your natural hair and your extensions. The good news is the routine is simple once you know it — and when something feels off, the answer is always a quick message, not a DIY fix.
