What's Normal (and What Isn't) with K-Tip Extensions

The first week in K-tip extensions comes with new sensations and a few moments that can look alarming if you don't know what to expect. Here's what's completely normal with keratin bond extensions, what isn't, and when to reach out.
Natural shedding is normal
- Everyone loses 50–100 hairs per day; with K-tips, those shed hairs stay trapped inside the bond.
- When a K-tip naturally sheds or is removed, you may see multiple hairs attached — that is normal daily shed, not hair pulled from the scalp.
- Losing a few K-tips over the wear cycle is normal. Losing several at once is not — message your stylist if it happens.
Feeling the bonds is normal
You'll feel the bonds when you touch or style your hair. They feel firm at first and soften over time. Mild scalp awareness for the first 3–7 days is the normal adjustment period. Persistent pain, pinching or soreness is not — call me.
Light tangling near the root
- Some light tangling near the bonds can happen if hair isn't brushed thoroughly, is air-dried, or has product buildup at the root.
- Twice-daily brushing and fully drying the bonds prevents almost all of it.
The Don'ts — every one of them matters
- Don't pick, twist or pull at the bonds.
- Don't leave bonds in past your recommended maintenance window.
- Don't attempt to color your extensions at home.
- Don't apply oils directly to the root area.
- Don't try to remove an extension yourself — ever.
- Don't skip drying your bonds.
When to contact me
- Multiple K-tips shedding in a short time.
- Ongoing pain or soreness.
- Excessive matting near the bonds.
- Anything that simply feels 'off' or concerning.
Failure to follow home care can lead to damage to your natural hair and your extensions. The good news: the routine is simple once you know it, and when something feels off, the right answer is always a quick message — never a DIY fix.
